What Is Your Relationship with Your Body?

Your most basic relationship, is the one with your own body.

This week is my birthday and I’m going to be 71. Yikes! Is that possible?

In my mind I’m not even 50…maybe 45.

On Gloria Steinem’s 40th birthday, someone commented that she didn’t look 40.

She responded by saying, “No, this is what 40 looks like.”

I’ve heard that 60 is the new 40.

Due to research and education, we have the opportunity to look and feel much younger than previous generations.

Our world has changed so much.

We have learned how to eat healthier and we have many ways to exercise: gyms, yoga, tai chi, swim, etc.

And, of course, there is a bounty of beauty products and procedures to create a more youthful look.

But, along with this focus on a more youthful, vibrant (and sexy) look, are we grateful for the body we have?

Or are we in a fight with our body, working against, and angry at it’s natural processes?

I think it’s important that we find gratitude for the miracle of our human body!

Our bodies work so hard to do all the things we ask of it.

Most of the time, my body cooperates with me and does what I want it to do.

Maybe I’m a little bit slower getting out of the car, or going up the stairs, but basically I’m blessed with health, strength, and flexibility.

Of course, I try to eat right, to fuel my body with healthy things.

I stopped eating sugar a few months ago, right before Halloween.

And in January, I also stopped eating flour.

I’ve never been a smoker, alcohol drinker, or caffeine user, so, of course that helps, too.

But it’s not about just giving up things.

I find that I really ENJOY a good salad!

Some crisp butter lettuce, grilled chicken, segments of orange. Yum!

A sense of taste is a “miracle” that my body provides for me.

In my office, I often burn a scented candle.

Diptyque is my favorite brand, they are from Paris, and burn very slowly with wonderful fragrances.

The enjoyment of the sense of smell is another gift from my body.

And how about the sense of touch…touching and being touched?

A good massage has to be one of the world’s best luxuries!

But I also love to touch the cheek of my adorable 9 year old grandson, Jace.

I swear he’s too cute for words!

On the other hand, if I’m having a hard time to sleep, my husband can get me to calm down and relax, just by rubbing my back.

His energy is grounding to me. More miracles from the human body!

So much to celebrate!

So, as I turn 71, I’m going to celebrate, with great gratitude, the miracle of my body.

(But no sugary birthday cake and no complaints!)
